Vasa or Viking? They Are Not the Same Museum

The Vasa is a 1628 warship, six centuries after the Viking age. The Viking Museum is a different building a few minutes away. How to not book the wrong one.

Updated August 2026

The Vasa is not a Viking ship. It is a Swedish warship that capsized on its maiden voyage in Stockholm harbour in 1628, was raised almost intact in 1961, and is now the centrepiece of its own museum. The Viking age had ended roughly six hundred years earlier.

This confusion is common enough that it is one of the most-asked questions about either museum, and the geography does not help: both sit on Djurgården, a few minutes’ walk apart.

Which Should You Book?

Both, if you have a Djurgården day. They are different visits and neither substitutes for the other.

If you only have time for one and you want to be impressed: the Vasa. A nearly complete 17th-century warship standing in a purpose-built hall is a genuinely extraordinary object, and it is the most-visited museum in Scandinavia for a reason.

If you only have time for one and you came for Vikings: this one, at $21 with 848 reviews at 4.6.

If you came for Vikings and have a whole day: neither — take the boat to Birka, which is an actual Viking town.

And a Third Confusion

Sweden’s most important Viking-age artefacts — the gold, the silver hoards, the grave goods — are at the Historical Museum in Östermalm, not at either Djurgården museum. If your interest is the material culture rather than the storytelling, that is the building you want.

So: three museums, three different things, and only two of them Viking.
